Songam Reservoir

Songam is a wonderful place to learn float tube or kayak bass fishing. The structure of Songam very straight forward. There are two shallow arms and a long dam area. Songam also has plenty of bank fishing opportunities. If you are in a float tube or kayak, watch out for the local canoe racing team. They train regularly and will not steer away if you are in their line. Songam has good feeding activity in the shallow arms that have some brush. Plenty of carp anglers also like to enjoy Songam, so parking on the weekend can get tricky. Songam is an easily deciphered fishery with good bass population.

All the bass winter at the base of the dam area. This is the deepest part of the lake at around 25 ft. During the spring bass with move into the shallow arms and start feeding. Songam is one of my favorite places to fish in early spring, because it is so predictable. During the summer milfoil and lilies develop near the bank, but not so heavy where you can’t maneuver a tube through. Later into the summer and early fall I would focus around the dam area.

Fishing tips- Float and fly is not a bad way to go during the spring. I have always had the best results with a smaller pattern (3-4 inches) fished quite slow (5 second pauses between strips). Weedless baits also are critical when fishing Songam. During the summertime sometimes the only way to get a bit is to skate your fly above the cover and when it reaches a hole you let it soak- before starting you retrieve again.
