I made the trip out to Daebudo Island an hour west of Seoul. The Dokdo Sea Fishing Site was empty. In the summer they provide little shelters that you can rent, and I imagine people fish all through the day and night. Dokdo is another one of South Korea’s fabulous stock fishing sites. I have very little experience with saltwater fly fishing, and struggled a bit at first. The only other person fishing asked to used my net, which is a must have due to the size of the fish, after which he gave me a small yellow bead head woolly bugger. Magic. I caught fish after fish mainly rock fish and two hefty steelhead. A five weight rod would be a little light here. A six is perfect. You can fish with an indicator or with a slow finger twitch retrieve. I started out this way. I didn’t last long because the line never lets your fingers dry and with freezing temps- it is nice to fish with one hand in your pocket. The fishing site isn’t deep. I only fished one end of the area, but it was about 8 feet. I did see the other angler hook a fish and then the fish caught something on the bottom. He had to break off- something to consider. There are also several aerators that create current. You can position yourself for a nice drift. The rock fish will eat just about anything. Silver bait fish patterns, blue, yellow, red, they don’t discriminate. The real prize are the steelhead. Big and powerful, they put up a good fight before coming to the net. They only took the yellow woolly bugger. There are also sea bream and flat fish lurking about, but maybe the cold weather puts them down. The winter time may be fly fishing only, as I didn’t see any sign of lure anglers. I will definitely be back. (4/1/22 Edit- So this winter during covid the site was closed. I don’t know if it was because of covid or something else. I will update this if the conditions change.)
