Last year I fished a lot of float and fly for pre-spawn bass. This year was a little different. My go to rig was a 8 ft 3 ips sink tip/leader on my regular floating line. The goal is to present the fly about four feet under the surface for as long as possible. Slow long pulls seemed to produce the most strikes, and I even caught a few with no retrieve at all. The feeding time was very short- starting at sunrise and only lasting for an hour or an hour and a half. There was also a feed 30 minutes before sunset. These pre-spawn fish in the reservoirs are looking for an easy meal. As always there is an abundance of bait fish in the cuts and coves and the bass stage in these areas. I fished a reservoir in Seosan that had a huge flat, where the water warmed up quickly and the bass were strong and hungry. In early March I had one trip that ended in a skunk, so I waited until I saw three days of warming trends. I was not looking at the day time temperatures, but rather the nights. The fly pattern didn’t change much. The colors that produced were white, silver, and pearl; matching the color of the forage. Smaller patterns produced more, but this could be because I was fishing the larger patterns faster- trying to induce a reaction strike. The fishing will get better as the weather warms. But the water level of the reservoirs will drop late May, and that changes everything. Some places will fish better, others will be impossible.
