I have been observing the feeding tendencies of the bass at Yeomchi Reservoir, the place where I have spent the most time fishing this year. You have your “splashers”, “chasers”, and if your lucky you find yourself in the middle of a “hunting party.” Splashers will make impressive Shamu type leaps as they ambush the baitfish from below. When they crash down; if you’re fast enough you can get a cast near the splash and get bit. The chasers make impressive runs that scatter baitfish all around, like a poorly trained sheep dog. There is no method- just madness. When fishing for these fish you have guess which way they will be going and place your cast accordingly.
Fishing for splashers and chasers is just blind casting with an educated guess. If you want the sure thing you have to be patient. Wait for the hunting party. These fish are bigger than your average splasher and chaser. They launch as a pack and look like salvo of torpedoes cutting through the water. When they meet their target its violent. The water churns. Anything that moves gets eaten. When I cast into the hunting party, my bucktail streamer gets smashed as soon as it hits the water. No stripping needed. There are a few other reservoirs in Korea where the bass feed like this, but its never as consistent as Yeomchi. Normally, this time of year I would be planning a trip out of the country, but as Covid drags on- reality sets in and makes me appreciate my home waters more.
