The Hobie is holding up great, and it has really expanded my range for saltwater fishing. In Gangneung a good launch point is Sacheon Port, in Donghae Eodal, and in Samcheok Gallamhang. In terms of conditions. I wouldn’t go out when the wave height is higher than 2.5 feet. Also something to consider is the time between waves. This determines the power. If the waves are coming in every 4-6 seconds, they won’t feel as powerful; but if the space between is 8-9 seconds, you’ll experience those deep troughs (which could be dangerous for beginners). For wind speeds, I don’t like to go out in anything above 10 mph (more comfort than safety). When you factor all of this- it only leaves a few suitable days to fish. So if you are serious about getting out there, you might want to dedicate a week.
Today is October 8th, 2024 and the ocean temperature is 72.1 F which is 4.7 degrees higher than the usual ocean temperature. I don’t know if the fish will hang around later into November (the second week of November in my experience is when the fishing slows down) or perhaps into the first week of December. I have been catching a lot of amberjack (방어) and dolphinfish (만새기). I have yet to catch any Spanish mackerel (삼치) from the kayak, but I have had good days for Spanish from the beach. Also, I haven’t been using my fly rod. Once I get a little more dialed in, or if my freezer is full (my mother in law likes to distribute fish to her friends)- I’ll dedicate a few days to fly only. A 30- 40 gram metal jig will catch everything. Once you get out into 100 feet or more of depth, you might want to go a little heavier.
Moving forward- I want to try and fish out of Osan Port in Uljin, and I still haven’t fished out of the kayak in Pohang. It is well know that those places have better and bigger fish due to underwater geological features. If there is anybody who wants to go out in the kayak together- please send me a message! A few kayaks grouped together is safer and keeps other boats at bay. Sidenote- most of the kayaks that go out are fishing off the bottom for flounder, rockfish, and octopus. I haven’t tried this yet.
